Why do you help people? On a daily basis, I mean. I’m not asking (in a roundabout way) why you want to be a doctor, or a social worker, or whatever. I’m asking – why do you hold the door open for the person behind you? Why do you help someone pick up her stuff when it’s scattered on the ground? Why do you help take care of an elderly person, or any person, for that matter, who needs your help? Is it a sense of obligation that compels you? Or, is it something more?
I’m sure that some people think it’s ‘something more.’ But, I’m not sure how many of these people notice their audience. I’m not sure how often (or seldom) they notice their self-conception being put to the test. I’m not sure whether I know a stranger, or they do.
